Humboldt Lofts is housed in the historic Humboldt Mill - part of the Washburn/Crosby flour milling complex that was the birthplace of General Mills. The Mill was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1983. The original Humboldt Mill was erected on its current site in 1873 but was destroyed by the "A" Mill explosion in 1878. The new mill, designed by architects J.T. Noyes and Sons, was rebuilt and operating in record time within 6 months.

The Humboldt Lofts are created from two types of construction. First, the historic renovation of the original 1878 Humboldt Mill, which features existing brick masonry with new windows situated in the original decorative openings. Adjoining the mill, a new loft structure, the Humboldt Annex, offers a contemporary opportunity for lofts in the Historic Mill District. The masonry and glass exterior is consistent with the existing industrial facades of its neighbors, however, varied slightly to create a modern interpretation of the industrial aesthetic. Humboldt's contemporary styling intentionally serves as a transition to the very modern Guthrie Theater on the River.
